Where to Vote

  • Updated

To cast a ballot with confidence, voters must answer a simple yet important question: Where do I vote? TurboVote’s Where to Vote experience allows TurboVote visitors and existing users to locate their polling location by simply entering their address or clicking a personalized link, helping voters identify the voting option that works best for them.

Discovery

TurboVote users can access the Where to Vote module from Election Guides, their Sample Ballot, or by entering their address in Where to Vote search from your destination site or embedded on your website. Existing users can also click personalized links to find Where to Vote.

See below for an example of the embedded Where to Vote search experience on the Plan My Vote demo website:

User Experience

Where to Vote provides actionable guidance for existing TurboVote users and visitors to your TurboVote site. Once visitors enter their address from any hub or search, or after existing users click a personalized link, they'll find polling place information specific to their address.

Single Polling Location

When voters are assigned a single polling place to vote early or on Election Day, they'll find its address displayed prominently with expandable details like the location's name, voting hours, and special notices, if available. Users can easily tap a button to get directions in Google Maps.

Multiple Polling Locations

When multiple polling places are available to vote early or on Election Day, TurboVote shows details for the closest voting location, along with a link to view all voting locations—making it easy to find the most convenient place to vote.

Voting by Mail

When voting by mail, users will find deadlines to request and return absentee ballots, as well as links to USPS and in-person drop-off locations (when available).

Election Coverage

Where to Vote election coverage for all 50 states plus DC is available for the November general election. Coverage for state primaries and other elections varies based on state and local participation in the Voting Information Project.

You can view the current coverage calendar here: https://www.votinginfoproject.org/election-coverage.

When voting locations are unavailable, TurboVote will continue directing users to their state or local election office website to help them find where to vote.

Embed on Your Site

By embedding Where to Vote Search on your website, you can drive traffic to your site and equip your audience with a centralized, easy-to-use resource to find their polling places. Where to Vote Search functions like other TurboVote search experiences, such as Sample Ballot Search and Election Search, making it easy to share with your audience and seamless to embed.

Promotion Ideas

Why It Matters

Voters cannot cast a ballot if they do not know where to vote. Because polling places and voting options often change—something that can be confusing for voters and discourage them from participating—it’s important that voters have easy access to accurate and up-to-date voting location information. Many polling place lookup tools can be difficult to find online or complicated to use.

Best Practices

You can promote Where to Vote as part of your get-out-the-vote communications. Encourage your audience to make a plan to cast a ballot by locating their polling place or ballot drop-off location well before Election Day. Review the TurboVote elections calendar for a complete list of upcoming elections.

There are several ways to implement Where to Vote. You can decide when to promote the tool based on your GOTV strategy or the needs of your voter engagement program.
